This is the *British Defence Medal 1939–1945* — a WWII campaign medal.
- *Text*: *THE DEFENCE MEDAL* down the right side
- *Dates*: *1939* at bottom, *1945* at top
- *Design*: Royal Crown above the Royal Coat of Arms, with lion and unicorn supporters
- *Suspension*: Original bar mount with pin, though the ribbon is missing
- *Condition*: Dark toned, some wear — typical for a medal that saw use
*History & criteria:*
- *Issued by*: United Kingdom and Commonwealth countries
- *Awarded for*: Service in the UK during WWII, or overseas service that didn’t qualify for other campaign stars. Given to military, Home Guard, Civil Defence, Fire Services, Police, etc.
- *Service period*: 3 years service in the UK, or 1 year non-operational overseas, or 6 months in a mine/bomb disposal unit. Awarded for service between 3 Sep 1939 – 8 May 1945 in Europe, or 2 Sep 1945 for Pacific
- *Composition*: Cupro-nickel — 75% copper, 25% nickel
- *Diameter*: 36mm
*Obverse*: Would show the uncrowned head of King George VI and “GEORGIVS VI D:G:BR:OMN:REX F:D:IND:IMP:”
